It is important to remember that the body is self healing, self balancing, self directed, and self reproducing. It does all of this but not without self-awareness. If the body is like this then all of life is like this and so is the Earth.
The body cannot heal itself from overwhelming trauma and perhaps neither can the Earth. But the ability to heal is something that we should not underestimate. What is important is self-awareness. It is our conscious participation in this profound and intrinsic quality of the self healing nature of living organisms that is new and that can be the game changer.
I am a healer. I heal with my hands through touch. It is very clear to me that I am simply facilitating the body’s ability to heal itself and I am only providing some firm but gentle external support so that it can break through the accumulated adhesions and compensations that burden it.
It is also very clear to me as a social theorist and historian that there is a global resurgence of this very practical and pragmatic healing energy that comes from within us naturally and inevitably. I see it in science and culture, industry and the arts. I see in myself and many others who express it in a tremendous diversity of ways.
I believe the Earth itself participates in this process. I am not talking about some kind of vague spiritual energy but the very real self healing and self balancing nature of life itself.
In the face of the many problems that we face including social and ecological collapse it is important to remember that there is more to ourselves and our culture and to the earth than we have contained in our dictionaries and textbooks. This intrinsic self healing drive is as real as evolution and like evolution it is a persistent force to be reckoned with and not underestimated. Consciousness and self awareness is the game changer and it is our job to become aware of and to nurture these trends when we find them in ourselves and others. This is my job as a somatic social theorist. I point out ways that I see this life force expressing itself in culture and history but I also point out its palpable anatomy. We participate in this self healing and self balancing life force not only through the relatively minor cognitive faculty of the intellect but also through the much larger system of somatic self-awareness which is rooted in our muscles and bones.
This is where I find a very real source of hope. It is a very ancient and at the same time very new source of hope that comes from within each one of us, from life itself, and from the Earth. As such it is powerfully coordinative and synergistic.
My own interest is in the revolutionary discovery of our connective tissue matrix, fascia, and a particular myofascial synergy that is called the “deep core” of the body. This is radically new science but at its heart it really is a primal story of the fabric of life itself.
Conscious awareness is the game changer and I invite you to join me at Prosocial Embodiment in exploring this part of ourselves. We can start within our bodies. This is the most practical starting point but is by no means the limit of the impact we have on each other and the planet.
Please join me in exploring this very personal and interior dimension of a palpable anatomical system of vitality and health and healing that pervades all of life. You may discover as I have that a little bit of self-awareness goes very long ways.
